A New Era for Southerness: Course Renovations Underway
We’re excited to be working with Sam Cooper and Joe McDonnell (McDonnell & Cooper) on our course renovations. Sam Cooper has been leading the charge in creating a more strategic and enjoyable golfing experience across the golf course. Strategic bunker renovations and design improvements have been implemented already – the work carried out to a high standard by our greenkeeping team.
Winter 2024/25 has also seen the exciting and ambitious redevelopment of our 13th and 14th holes. When Philip Mackenzie-Ross designed Southerness in 1947, these were the closing and opening holes respectively. 50 years after the original clubhouse location was moved to the present position, construction is ongoing for a reimagined 13th and 14th – shaped by Rob Sammels and assisted again by our greenkeeping team.
The 13th, a drivable par-4, is draped on the very edge of the Solway Firth. The 14th, a three-shot par-5, plays away from the water’s edge towards Criffel. Both add variety, beauty and strategic challenge to the links, while underlining our ongoing commitment to preserving the integrity of our iconic links.
